Quick tip: What to do if you encounter a fog bank while driving on the highway?
Fog patches, known as the 'invisible killer' of traffic safety, occur more frequently in winter and usually happen from night to early morning. Fog patches are likely to appear on highways, so how should you deal with them when driving on the highway?
While driving, if you suddenly encounter a thick fog, you should stay calm and not panic. Slow down, but avoid braking abruptly, and don’t stop on the spot to prevent rear-end collisions.
Also, when driving in fog, strictly follow traffic rules and speed limits. Never drive fast. The thicker the fog, the shorter the visibility, so the lower your speed should be.
Avoid sudden steering or changing lanes randomly. You can use road markings and the taillights of the car in front to guide your sight, and intermittently use your horn to indicate your vehicle’s position.
If you cannot drive in foggy weather or there’s a traffic accident ahead, pull over to the rightmost lane, turn on your fog lights, low beams, and hazard lights, and have everyone get out to a safe area outside the guardrail. Do not wait inside the car, and make sure to call the authorities.
When driving in fog, generally avoid slamming or suddenly releasing the accelerator, and don’t brake sharply or turn sharply. If you need to reduce speed, slowly ease off the accelerator, then lightly press the brake a few times to control your speed and prevent rear-end collisions.
