When disc brakes are widely promoted, you need to pay attention to these things
With the implementation of the new regulations, disc brakes have once again become a hot topic, and many truck drivers are questioning their reliability, ease of maintenance, and so on. In fact, a lot of drivers also have some misconceptions about how to operate and maintain disc brakes and don’t really know how to use them. So, let’s quickly go over some usage tips for disc brakes.
▎Don’t randomly pour water to cool down on a downhill, be careful not to crack the brake disc
Unlike drum brakes, disc brakes mainly work by the brake pads clamping onto the brake disc to create braking. Because of the way drum brakes are built, you can pour water on them when going downhill to cool them down, which helps with heat dissipation and improves braking performance.
But you can't cool disc brakes by pouring water on them because the brake discs get really hot and heat up quickly when braking. If you pour water on them after long braking, the red-hot discs will quench from the cold water, making them brittle and causing them to crack.
So without water splashing on disc brakes, can they stop the vehicle when going downhill? Based on the current usage in the market, disc brakes experience much less heat fade than drum brakes. Plus, disc brakes themselves cool down faster than drum brakes, so they can meet braking requirements even during continuous braking.
At the same time, we also recommend using auxiliary braking along with disc brakes, like a retarder or engine braking.
▎Pay attention to keeping disc brakes dry—rust causing uneven wear can make the whole assembly scrap.
In daily use, another situation we often encounter is when the disc brake caliper gets rusted, causing one side of the brake pad to be stuck, which can lead to uneven wear or the brake not returning after being released. This usually happens because water gets into the brake caliper, such as after driving through a puddle, or because the dust and waterproof covers aren't working properly.
How is this situation usually handled? In this case, we generally need to check two places: one is the brake dust and water cover, and the other is the brake caliper and brake disc. If the brake disc shows uneven wear, it means the caliper has seized, and you'll need to take it to a service station for repair.
Disc brakes are already a big trend, but most riders still don’t know enough about using and maintaining them, which leads to a lot of problems during use.
● Editor’s note:
So, we also recommend using auxiliary brakes along with disc brakes for better results. And if the main vehicle has an EBS system, it’s best for the trailer to also be equipped with an EBS system. Only with both can you fully take advantage of EBS and disc brake performance.
