How long does a desiccant tank last before it needs to be replaced?
Many drivers are curious about how long a drying tank lasts before it needs to be replaced. However, since the operating conditions of each vehicle are different, and the lifespan of drying tanks varies among different manufacturers, it's difficult to provide a standardized replacement schedule. Today, though, we'll share a little trick that allows you to know at any time whether your drying tank needs to be replaced.
From the appearance, the bottom has already shown a certain degree of oil leakage, indicating that the internal desiccant has long been ineffective and can no longer adequately absorb moisture, causing increased humidity in the truck's air lines and the formation of condensation.
The way to check if the desiccant canister has expired is to start with the gas cylinder. Use the vent valve at the bottom of the cylinder to see if the bottom of the cylinder is damp or has water. Since the valve is located at the bottom of the cylinder and water has a relatively high specific gravity, if the desiccant canister has failed, the moisture in the gas line will naturally accumulate at the bottom of the cylinder, right above the valve, due to gravity.
If oil or water comes out after venting, it indicates that the drying tank has failed.
The grease stain is very noticeable
The gas cylinder shown in the picture has very obvious oil leakage. Besides being due to the use of low-quality dryers with a shorter lifespan, it is also related to its frequent operation in humid areas in the south. Because the air humidity is higher than in the north, the lifespan of the dryer is also shorter than in northern regions.
It is best to install a pull ring on the vent valve to make frequent inspections easier.
After cleaning the oil or water residue accumulated at the bottom of the gas cylinder, simply replace it with a new dry cylinder. In daily use, it is a good habit to regularly check the gas cylinder’s release valve. If you also install a pull ring, it not only makes daily inspections more convenient but also allows you to occasionally rotate it, helping the valve seal more evenly and preventing gas leaks.
