Tyre pressure not showing? Experienced drivers: the drying tank should be replaced earlier
There are two types of brake systems on vehicles: hydraulic brakes and air brakes, with trucks mostly using air brakes. That's because air brakes are responsive, have high air pressure, and provide strong force, making them suitable for trucks.
Schematic diagram of air brake principle
The air brake process starts with air coming out of the air compressor, entering the air dryer assembly, getting dried, then passing through the air reservoir and various valves, finally reaching the brake chamber. When the vehicle needs to brake, you press the brake pedal to carry out the braking process.
▎Two common faults of the air brake system are excessive moisture and air leakage in the pipes
Too much moisture can damage components. For example, if there's too much water in the air tank, it can corrode the connections of the pressure sensor and damage the sensor, leading to no air pressure display on the instrument cluster. Also, excess moisture in the brake system can freeze in cold winters, which might cause brake failure or even brake malfunction, putting lives at risk.
Therefore, maintaining the brake system is particularly important. The most important aspect of brake system maintenance is paying attention to the replacement of the dryer. When any of the following three situations occur, it reminds drivers that the dryer needs to be replaced. 1. A large amount of water is released from the air reservoir; 2. Oil droplets form at the exhaust port of the air treatment unit; 3. It has been used for over a year. If there is only a small amount of oil at the exhaust port of the air treatment unit, replacement is not needed, as this is a normal discharge phenomenon.
Air leaks in the piping are another common fault in the brake system. 1. Piping wear, this can be managed by paying attention to wrapping and arranging the pipes neatly. 2. When installing quick connectors, make sure they are properly in place; when you hear a 'click', it means they are secure. 3. For pipe joint leaks, clean off any oil and dirt from the joints during installation to prevent impurities from causing poor sealing and air leaks. In the whole brake system, excess moisture and pipe air leaks are two common issues. As long as you regularly replace the dryer and wrap the pipes properly, the pneumatic brake system will be less prone to problems.
