Truck drivers, come quickly: emergency measures for a semi-trailer brake failure

What should you do if the semi-trailer suddenly experiences brake failure? Driver friends should learn more about this kind of knowledge, as it can save lives in critical moments. Below are some small emergency measures for semi-trailer brake failure prepared for driver friends, hoping they can be helpful to everyone.

There are many causes of trailer brake failure, mainly the following three points:

1. Lack of necessary maintenance of the brake system, such as too many impurities in the master cylinder, poor sealing, failure of the vacuum booster, excessively dirty brake fluid or mixing of several types of brake fluid causing air blockage when heated, leakage of the master cylinder or wheel cylinders, or air leaks at the air tank or pipeline connections;

2. Malfunction of components caused by improper operation;

3. Severe overloading, where under the influence of gravitational acceleration, the vehicle's inertia is increased, directly causing brake failure.

▎If a vehicle experiences brake failure while driving, how should a semi-trailer driver respond?

1. When descending long or steep slopes, a semi-trailer should apply the brakes regardless of any issues. This not only tests the braking performance but also buys time to control the vehicle speed in case of brake failure. This is also known as predictive braking.

2. Control the direction according to the road conditions and vehicle speed, disengage the high gear, and then quickly rev the throttle in neutral before shifting from high gear to low gear. This creates significant traction resistance at the moment of engagement, which quickly reduces vehicle speed.

Additionally, when shifting to a low gear, use the handbrake in a controlled manner. Be careful not to apply the handbrake too tightly or too slowly. If applied too tightly, the brake disc may lock up and potentially damage the transmission components, resulting in loss of braking capability. If applied too slowly, the brake disc may wear out or burn, losing its braking effectiveness.

3. Apply the vehicle's bumper, cabin, and other rigid parts to rub or collide with natural roadside obstacles (rocks, large trees, or slopes) in order to achieve the goal of stopping the vehicle forcefully to escape danger, while minimizing accident damage as much as possible.

4. If the brakes fail on a downhill slope and the vehicle's own systems cannot be used to control speed, the driver should decisively use natural obstacles, such as roadside rocks or large trees, to create resistance for the vehicle.

If no suitable terrain or objects can be found temporarily, in an emergency, the vehicle's side can be moved closer to the mountain side to increase resistance through friction and gradually reduce speed.

5. If a semi-trailer experiences brake failure while going uphill, the driver should timely shift to medium or low gear, maintain sufficient power to drive to the top of the slope, and stop. The driver should keep the vehicle in a low gear and pull the handbrake tightly. Passengers should promptly use stones, wooden blocks, or other objects to wedge the wheels. If there is backward sliding, the rear of the vehicle should face the slope or a safe side, and the headlights and emergency signal lights should be turned on to alert vehicles in front and behind.
