I wonder if fellow truckers have noticed that nowadays, the configuration of cargo trucks is getting higher and higher. Looking back more than a decade ago, cargo trucks, whether compared to tractor trucks or light trucks, had much more 'spartan' overall configurations—cramped bunks, massive steering wheels, narrow spaces. The only comfort feature was air conditioning, which often malfunctioned and would blow hot air in the middle of summer.

Undoubtedly, this is a reflection of many veteran drivers' memories. However, looking at today's cargo truck market, it’s clear that engines are becoming increasingly powerful, vehicles are equipped with a dazzling array of features, and various comfort configurations are flourishing. You could say that if a trucker wants to pick a highly customized model in the current market, it’s no big issue. But although the trucks are very good, and many medium-duty trucks even use tractor truck cabins, for the current freight industry, is this design really a good thing or a bad thing?

In the nearly three years of recurring epidemics, many truck drivers inevitably encounter situations where their travel codes show a star and they have to be quarantined in service areas or parking lots, especially for some drivers who operate light trucks nationwide. If they encounter quarantine or centralized lockdowns, I guarantee that the moment they step out of the cab, they will instantly have thoughts of selling or changing their truck.

Indeed, the more comfortable and spacious the cab of a cargo vehicle, the more positions a driver can adopt inside. Take the latest Dongfeng Tianlong KL PLUS medium truck as an example: since it uses the same design as their KL tractor trucks, the cab space is very spacious, with an external width of 2465mm, an external height increased by 450mm, and an internal height of 2035mm. Coupled with the through-passage design, it can be said that as long as you are not Yao Ming, moving around inside this space is very easy.

At the same time, the larger the cab space, the more 'room to maneuver' truck drivers have, such as adding a water dispenser, an external parking air conditioner, or converting the upper bunk into storage space. Alternatively, they can design a small kitchen to hold cutting boards, pots and pans, refrigerators, and other equipment, enhancing the convenience of using the vehicle.

Thanks to optimized design and improved configurations, although truck drivers' quality of life has increased, some "issues" have been exposed. Some drivers even claim that a larger and more comfortable cab will increase competition within the industry, thereby lowering freight rates. But is there really a connection between the two?

▎The more comfortable the cab, the longer the distance and the fiercer the competition

There is a saying in the freight industry: 'The more comfortable the truck, the poorer the truck driver.' At first, when I had just entered this industry, I did not understand the deeper meaning of this saying. But with observation, it is not hard to see that the more comfortable and spacious the cab, the longer distances the driver will travel, and the bolder they are in taking orders that are farther away, which is precisely the beginning of the nightmare.

From the perspective of automobile companies, there is nothing wrong with making the cab bigger and more comfortable in order to enhance product competitiveness, and a good product can attract the attention of truck drivers. This is understandable, and the key reason lies in the way truck drivers use their vehicles.

According to statistics, there are currently nearly 20 million registered truck drivers in China, making it the country with the most truck drivers and the most developed freight industry in the world. However, behind this development lies endless competition. To survive in today's freight industry, where fuel prices are high, freight rates are low, and the number of drivers is large, having some 'tricks' is naturally necessary.

Moreover, coupled with the pressure of car loans, with zero-down-payment policies emerging one after another, many people are attracted by the immediate benefits and temptations without much thought. They buy trucks to enter the freight industry, and when faced with the pressure of repayment, no matter how low the price, they will choose to take orders. The so-called 'mantou trucks,' heavy-load light trucks, and guerrilla trucks mentioned by veteran drivers are products of this distorted competition era.  

They carry a few buns and some buckets of water, driving all over the country, and the wide, comfortable cab helps them solve almost all their living problems in the vehicle. Unknowingly, tall and comfortable cabs actually enhance their capacity for vicious competition. For these truck drivers, vehicles with smaller cabs and poor configurations in the past could only take orders within 500 km, but once the vehicle configuration is upgraded, they can take orders even 1,000 km away.

The cars that were originally purchased could only handle short to medium trips. Now, with the configurations provided by the new vehicles, truck drivers can take on medium to long-distance orders. Combined with the competitive model of accepting orders at low prices, these drivers may even affect freight rates and earnings in other regions. Gradually, the entire freight market and pricing system get thrown into chaos.

In fact, for the transportation industry, 'cutthroat competition' is more like a tragedy: freight rates keep hitting rock bottom, and the status of drivers continues to decline. From the vehicle’s perspective, development is certainly moving in a better direction, and the original intention of manufacturers in building these vehicles was definitely not for these 'good configurations' to become tools for low-price competition. Perhaps, in addition to the establishment of more standardized transportation associations and regulations that can stimulate transformation in this industry, we truck drivers also need to appropriately reject low-price competition and avoid mutually destructive freight pricing.

Why didn’t many veteran drivers in the 1990s need sleeper cabs or excessive comfort features? Besides the technological limitations of that era, on one hand, because of higher incomes, they could stay in hotels and eat at restaurants when they arrived in a place; on the other hand, because of low prices, even staying in a hotel or having a modest meal didn’t cost much. Although it was once enviable, the increasingly fierce competition in the freight industry cannot be changed for now. Today’s truck drivers may only be able to go along with the era’s development and maintain the bottom line of freight rates for the industry to welcome a better future.
