Is the air line connection unreliable? The problem with the handshake valve needs to be addressed first.

The air line connection between the tractor and the trailer has a key component—a quick connector. Generally, the original quick connector that comes with the tractor is a handshake-type connector, which we usually call a handshake valve. There is also a plug-in type connector, which many people simply call a quick connector.

Many of our users, after buying a new vehicle, will replace the tractor’s original handshake valve with a plug-in type connector. Some trailers are even equipped with plug-in type connectors right from the factory to reduce the hassle of modifications for users later on. So why is the handshake valve so unpopular among some users?

● User: The plug-in type is not perfect, but the handshake valve is even less reassuring.

In fact, comparatively speaking, the connection operation of plug-in connectors is not so 'fast,' making them more suitable for users who do not frequently attach and detach, while handshake connectors are more suitable for frequent connections and are more commonly used in trailer logistics.

Furthermore, plug-in connectors are not vehicle-specific components, and the air flow of this type of self-closing quick connector is often relatively small; moreover, if plug-in connectors remain connected for a long time, they are prone to water accumulation and rust.

Handshake Connector

Since plug-in connectors have these drawbacks, why still use them? Some users say it’s simply because they are more secure and airtight; in this respect, handshake valves are still somewhat unsatisfactory.

According to users, some handshake connectors do not fit tightly, causing air leaks, and there are even concerns that they might come off when the road is bumpy. Everyone knows the consequences of poor air supply: either it affects braking performance or causes trailer brakes to engage unexpectedly, both of which are very serious situations.

● Handshake valves do not distinguish between male and female ends; connection and installation cannot be done arbitrarily

There are usually two reasons for this situation: one is poor quality or aging and damaged rubber gaskets, and the other is the design and specification issues of the handshake connector.

Connection Status of Handshake Couplings

Unlike plug-in couplings, handshake couplings are specially designed components for connecting the air lines between tractors and trailers. They also have a particular feature—the couplings are all identical, with no distinction between male and female ends. It should be noted that common quick couplings usually have male and female ends, including plug-in couplings, 7-pin power connectors, ABS connectors, etc.

When connecting, plugins with male and female ends make it easier to identify whether they are properly installed, whereas handshake couplings require careful alignment during installation; otherwise, they may not connect properly, and the rubber gaskets could even be damaged.

● Inconsistent production tolerances lead to loose connections

Aside: In some foreign regions, trailer handshake valves are customarily locked, and Guangdong also has other anti-theft devices.

Due to this special design, the requirements for production specifications and standards are relatively high. Currently, handshake joints produced by different manufacturers use different molds, and dimensional tolerances also vary. Often, the tractor and trailer use handshake joints from different manufacturers, and differences are noticed when connecting them.

If you find that the handshake joints do not connect smoothly, it is recommended to replace both paired joints with high-quality products of the same brand.

It is necessary to establish unified and strict standards for these vehicle components. On one hand, they affect vehicle safety; on the other hand, they impact the development of the logistics industry. Currently, the development of domestic rental and shared trailers is constrained, one reason being the issue of vehicle standardization.。
