Don't panic if your truck's brakes fail; teach you how to save yourself in minutes

With the rapid development of the logistics industry, the demand for transportation efficiency is also increasing. The roads are being improved, and vehicles are driving faster and faster, so the probability of truck accidents is showing a rapid upward trend. Among these, brake failure is not uncommon. Although it is rare, if handled improperly, the consequences can be very serious. Therefore, it is very necessary to be familiar with some braking measures in emergency situations in advance. There are mainly three causes of brake failure:

1. Lack of necessary maintenance of the braking system, too many impurities in the master brake cylinder, poor sealing, failure of the vacuum booster, overly dirty brake fluid or the use of different types of brake fluid mixed together causing vapor lock when heated, leakage from the master or wheel cylinders, air leakage from the air tank or pipeline connections.

  2. Mechanical failure caused by improper operation, such as driving downhill for a long time, which can cause the brake pads to generate heat from friction, the brake drum to carbonize, and the braking function to completely fail.

3. Due to severe overloading, under the action of gravitational acceleration, the vehicle's motion inertia is increased, directly leading to brake failure.

Don't Panic If Your Truck Brakes Fail: Learn How to Save Yourself in Minutes

Handbrake Braking

If the brakes fail, you can use the handbrake to stop the vehicle. The correct method is to slowly pull up the handbrake, tightening and releasing it in several steps to gradually slow down and stop the vehicle. It is important to note that when pulling the handbrake lever, you should press the handbrake lever’s safety button. This allows the handbrake lever to operate smoothly during tightening and releasing, preventing it from locking up when pulled tightly.

  Engine Braking

Manual transmission cars can also decelerate and stop by forcefully downshifting. The specific method is to directly shift into 2nd gear, then release the accelerator and lift the clutch. At this time, the vehicle will have a sensation similar to sudden braking, and then shift into 1st gear at an appropriate moment. You can then turn off the ignition, using the compression of the engine cylinders to bring the vehicle to a stop.

If brake failure occurs on dangerous road sections like downhill slopes, to prevent the situation from worsening, it may be necessary to use roadside obstacles such as piles of sand or mud, grass mounds, ditches, trees, rocks, etc., to create resistance and stop the vehicle.

Emergency Self-Rescue Measures

1. Seat belts can prevent passengers from being thrown against the windshield during emergency braking. If you are not wearing a seat belt, it is best not to attempt to resist the impact forcefully, as this could cause more severe injuries than letting the body respond naturally, because deceleration impacts are more sudden. At the moment of impact, try to move away from the steering wheel as early as possible, cross your arms over your chest, and cover your head with your hands.

2. Data shows that the front passenger seat is the most dangerous. If you are sitting there, the first step is to hug your head and lie on the seat, or make fists with your hands, protecting your forehead with your wrists, while bending your body and raising your knees to protect your abdomen and chest.

3. For the back seat, the best protection method is to quickly extend one leg forward to press against the back of the front seat, bend the elbows in front of the chest, open your hands to protect your head and face, and lean your back against the seat.

4. Here we also emphasize that if a car accident occurs or emergency braking happens, quickly push forward on the armrest or seatback with both hands and use your legs to stiffly push forward with one foot in front of the other. This helps absorb the impact and cushion the body’s forward momentum, thereby reducing injury severity. Never shout during a collision; keep your lips tightly closed and teeth clenched to avoid biting your tongue. There is a high possibility of fire after a car collision, so once the impact stops, everyone should quickly try to exit the vehicle.
