Without using PTFE tape, the air line fittings can also be completely leak-proof.
As one of the most important resources on a truck, compressed air needs to provide power for critical assemblies such as brakes, clutches, cab suspension, driver seats, and airbag suspensions. To deliver it to where it’s needed, trucks are filled with a complex network of hidden pipelines. These pipelines must ensure sufficient airtightness. For this reason, many vehicle manufacturers choose high-quality, reliable brand products, such as VOSS connectors.
However, in the trailer sector, almost no manufacturers use such high-cost components, so the pneumatic brake system of trailers becomes the most common part where air leaks occur in daily use.
A few days ago, Hu Dayong, also known as Brother Hu, who installs and repairs ABS braking systems on the forum, traveled all the way to Xinjiang to help a fellow trucker install a WABCO ABS system. At the installation site, I noticed that the pipe fittings he was using were a bit different from the ones we usually see.
● Say goodbye to PTFE tape, sealing is more reliable
For trailer valves, such as the pipe fittings used on ABS solenoid valves, most of them previously used products without sealing functions. To ensure they don't leak air, raw tape had to be wrapped around the threads before being screwed into the valve body. This method may seem simple, but it's actually a last-resort solution with very poor reliability. Loose fittings and air leaks occur frequently. In some cases, residues from the raw tape can even enter the ABS valve body, causing the piston to jam.
The fittings used by Hu have sealing rings, so they can achieve a seal without having to wrap Teflon tape. You can easily compare: on the left is a traditional fitting wrapped with a lot of Teflon tape, while on the right is a new fitting with a built-in sealing ring.
Assembly is very simple: just fit the metal sealing ring and then install the O-ring rubber seal. Brother Hu explained that once this joint is installed on the ABS valve body, it is not easy to loosen, has excellent sealing performance, and can completely prevent air leaks from occurring.
● High-quality joint, easy to install and leak-proof
In addition, the three-piece connectors for the Yada tubes (commonly known as nylon tubes) used by Brother Hu are also different from common products. According to him, this type of connector set does not require riveting with clamps and a hammer like previous products. You just hold the tube by hand, lightly push the inner core against a hard surface, and it can be easily inserted, making installation very convenient. Moreover, the sealing and reliability are excellent, with almost no instances of air leakage or disconnection.
If I were to mention a drawback, it would probably be that the price is too high. The cost of just one core piece of the three-piece set is enough to cover the price of a whole traditional three-piece set. Therefore, to save costs, very few repair shops are willing to use this high-quality pipeline connector.
Although trailer pipeline connectors are insignificant small parts in the entire brake system, poor quality or improper installation can lead to extremely serious consequences. Besides air leaks, the connector might even detach under pressure, causing brake failure. For safety reasons, it is recommended to use high-quality products when installing the pipeline.
