The tricks in the world are too deep! Over the years, which ones have you fallen for?

Encountering a broken-down vehicle on the highway and getting scammed by temporary roadside assistance! Have you ever experienced this? Experienced drivers, having been on the road for years, know that there are many tricks out there, and they are usually cautious when seeking help on the highway. However, a trick is always a trick and can't always be avoided.

Fellow driver: Master, can you help me fix a tire? No problem, 200 each.

Earlier, during a chat with truck driver Ma, we talked about some frustrating situations encountered on the highway. While transporting goods from Guangzhou to Hebei, the driver passed through Henan and discovered that the rear dual tires were underinflated. Not familiar with the area, he had no choice but to drive to the nearest service area to find a mechanic to fix the problem.

Of course, as an experienced driver, I know the principle of 'ask first, avoid chaos later.' Before removing the tire, I had to find out how much a tire repair would cost. The result was as expected: the mechanic said it would cost 200 yuan to fix the tire. Since Brother Ma was in a hurry at the time, he thought it was fine if highway repairs were a bit more expensive and just let the mechanic get to work. As it turned out, a scheme is always a scheme.

After the tires were removed, the mechanic smiled back, and I instantly felt that something was wrong. As it turned out, according to the mechanic, he said, "Sorry, earlier I said one tire is 200 yuan, two tires 400 yuan. Do you want to repair them? If you don’t, putting the tires back will cost you at least 200 yuan." What else could I do? I chose the mechanic myself, so even if I cried, I would have to pay.

The 'fake traffic officer' urged me to move the car quickly, leaving me helplessly to accept the high repair fee.

The scheme was too deep, and it was obviously hard to keep up with the pace. Previously, on the Chengyu Expressway section in Sichuan, a truck driver experienced a minor car malfunction and had no choice but to stop on the emergency lane. Shortly after stopping, two people wearing reflective vests posing as 'highway police' came and told him to move the car immediately, otherwise he would be penalized for illegally occupying the emergency lane, have points deducted, be fined, and have his vehicle towed.

Under the urging of the traffic police, he had no choice but to contact a mechanic through the contact information provided by this group of 'police.' After briefly explaining the vehicle's problem over the phone, about ten minutes later, three mechanics arrived, and the 'highway police' drove away from the scene.

Unlike communicating over the phone, after being checked by a repair technician, the on-site repair, including the cost of replacing parts, totaled 2,800 yuan. While the truck driver was hesitating about whether to repair, the 'highway police' from earlier happened to appear in the opposite lane, sternly urging him to quickly finish the repair and leave. With no other choice, the driver had to agree to the repair, and the total repair cost, including the placement fee for traffic cones, came to 4,000 yuan. Did they dismantle the engine? That’s so expensive.

In fact, there was something suspicious about this case: this police team did not arrive in a patrol car. Moreover, the repair worker they called charged an outrageous fee, whereas the actual cost of the repair was probably only around 400 yuan, far less than the 2,800 yuan charged at the time. Later, when the truck driver called the Chengyu Expressway Highway Police, he found out that these people weren’t police at all—they were impostors.

The gang uses accident scams with vehicles; if you don’t pay, they won’t let you leave.

Encountering staged accidents on the road is something that many people have probably heard about. Here, I’d like to share a previous case of a staged accident gang that appeared in Xi'an. Earlier, Xi'an traffic police received a report stating that there had been a minor collision between an Audi car and a heavy semi-trailer at an intersection. The Audi driver demanded 5,000 yuan from the truck driver for a private settlement, but since the amount was relatively large, the truck driver refused to settle privately and reported it to the police.

After receiving the report, the Fourth Division of Xi'an Traffic Police took on the case. Based on an analysis of the accident scene photos, the truck was found to have committed illegal lane changes and overloading, and should bear full responsibility for the accident. However, when checking the car driver's information, it was discovered that in 2017, he had been involved in 8 traffic accidents, all without exception involving scrapes with heavy semi-trailers. Of the outcomes of these accidents, 6 were settled privately, with the truck parties compensating between 2,000 to 4,000 yuan. Eventually, the suspect was arrested directly.

Why do scammers who stage car accidents often target truck drivers? In most cases, trucks are easier targets compared to small cars due to frequent issues like overloading or other violations, making them more likely to be exploited. Many truck drivers, worried that having their vehicle impounded will prevent them from delivering goods, often have no choice but to settle privately.

‘Poor while driving, rich while fixing cars; living in a villa while providing highway rescue’ may sound like a joking remark, but it does reflect certain underlying phenomena in the industry. Even though people may all live at the lower end of society, many still exploit each other – loaders demand perks, warehouse staff demand perks, and even parking lot attendants ask for perks. The industry is full of intricate schemes, so truckers are advised to stay vigilant.
