The truck braking system uses air as a medium to transmit braking force. With each press of the brake, compressed air releases power to the wheel cylinders, pushing the brake pads to brake.
Due to the greater number of axles in medium and heavy trucks, especially in vehicle trains, there are stricter requirements for the air supply capacity and air pressure of the braking system.
Generally speaking, car trains often use dual air line control, which are the red and yellow air hoses behind the tractor. These two air hoses are drawn from the trailer valve installed on the tractor and are connected respectively to the trailer's brake control line and the air supply line.
● Low air pressure will cause you trouble
For trucks with dual-chamber brake air chambers, a brake chamber can be used both for braking and for parking brake purposes.
On one hand, insufficient air pressure can lead to inadequate inflation of the vehicle's brake chambers, directly resulting in reduced braking performance or even a complete loss of braking ability.
On the other hand, insufficient air pressure can also cause the return spring in the parking brake chamber to remain in the released state, leading to dragging brakes or even wheel lock-up. If the driver does not notice this and continues to operate the vehicle for a long time, it can cause the wheels to overheat from friction and even lead to tire fires, with very serious consequences.
Since trailers do not have their own air pumps, all air supply depends on the tractor's air pump. After being distributed through the trailer valves, it is supplied via these two air hoses. If the quality of the hoses is poor, leaks or air loss can pose a threat to driving safety.
