Brake failure is too terrifying. When will speed limiters become common?
With the rapid development of the logistics era, the technology in the automotive industry is constantly innovating, and safety has become the primary concern for users and companies when purchasing vehicles. Brake performance is the fundamental guarantee of safety; when driving at high speeds, brake failure can lead to unimaginable consequences if not handled properly. Uphill, downhill, sharp turns, skidding...
What are the causes of brake failure? When the brakes fail, how can one make the correct judgment in a short time and minimize losses to the greatest extent possible? ● Causes: The three most common situations of brake failure Brake failure is terrifying. When will auxiliary brakes become popular? Today, we will mainly talk about pneumatic brakes. In simple terms, the medium for pneumatic brakes is compressed air. When the user steps on the brake pedal, the compressed air in the storage tank enters the wheel brake chamber through the brake valve to apply the brakes. Conversely, releasing the brake pedal closes the pathway for compressed air while opening the brake valve to release the brakes.
1. Insufficient brake air pressure, lack of regular maintenance on the braking system, aging of the air circuit and valves, poor sealing, etc., lead to insufficient brake air pressure, thereby affecting the performance of the brakes.
2. Continuous and frequent braking on highways or long downhill sections of mountain roads can generate a huge amount of heat due to friction from prolonged braking, leading to brake fade and ultimately resulting in brake failure.
3. High-speed overload: The heavier the vehicle, the greater the inertia at high speeds, resulting in longer gliding distances. This is often the reason we hear drivers say that under severe overload, the brakes are essentially ineffective.● Insufficient air pressure increases danger.
The downhill sections can easily trigger brake failure, which is an unexpected situation that generally has no warning signs. Moreover, most people may think that brake failure can be mitigated by downshifting to reduce speed. However, many modern heavy-duty trucks use air-assisted clutches, and when the air pressure is insufficient, the clutch is nearly impossible to press down, let alone downshift.Generally, shifting from high gear to low gear requires increasing the engine speed. If brake failure occurs due to insufficient air pressure, the clutch may very well fail as well. Attempting to downshift while accelerating to raise the RPM in such a scenario is particularly risky and not advisable. Even if the brakes are functioning properly, driving in low gear downhill can minimize the risk of brake failure. I believe everyone understands the benefits of driving downhill in low gear better than I do, so I won't elaborate further. ● Auxiliary Braking for Safe Driving.
Engine Auxiliary Braking: Simply put, there exists a power chain in the vehicle. During an uphill climb, power is generated by the engine, transmitted through the drive system to propel the vehicle forward. Similarly, during a downhill descent, we can generate resistance from the engine to provide a braking force on the vehicle. Hydraulic Retarder: In simple terms, it reduces the vehicle's speed through a hydraulic device. It consists of components such as the retarder itself, a control device, and an electronic control unit. In the structure of the retarder, the rotor and stator form a working chamber. When the hydraulic retarder is in operation, the electronic control system regulates the proportional valve to apply air pressure to the working fluid, causing the oil to fill the working chamber.
The rotor is driven to rotate the oil by the rotation of the output shaft, while the stator is fixed and exerts a reaction force on the oil. This reaction force is also transmitted to the rotor, impeding its rotation and thereby achieving the effect of slowing down the vehicle. Due to the high initial purchase cost of the hydraulic retarder, it will take time for it to become popular domestically.
