Many truck drivers have experienced brakes that don't work well. To fix this, a lot of people end up spending a lot of money upgrading the braking system, but the results are often disappointing, and you still have to constantly adjust the brake gap to ensure reliable braking.
There are many reasons for brake failure, but if the brakes were just adjusted and worked well for a short time before the problem reoccurs, there is only one cause: a damaged adjustment arm that has lost its self-locking ability.
● Hard to detect failure, posing safety risks
Brake weakness caused by a failed self-locking adjustment arm is very common, but drivers who can identify the cause immediately are very rare. This results in many trucks being on the road with defects, posing serious safety risks to themselves and others.
There are mainly two reasons why it's hard to notice when the adjusting arm is damaged: 1. Most drivers never adjust the brake pad gap themselves and always go to the repair shop for a mechanic to do it. Since mechanics deal with many vehicles every day, they can't specifically pay attention to the working condition of every adjusting arm on each car. So even if the adjusting arm has failed, it often gets overlooked by them.
2. Once the self-locking function of the adjusting arm fails, it’s hard to tell just by looking. You can only confirm it after multiple adjustments and use, which is quite a long and tedious process.

How can you tell if the adjusting arm has failed? One way is to first adjust the brake gap yourself, then operate normally on the road for a day or two, and then adjust the brake gap again. If you find that an adjusting arm allows a much larger gap this time, you can basically confirm that the adjusting arm has failed.
To prevent these worn adjustment arms from threatening your own safety, it's recommended to get into the habit of adjusting the brake clearance yourself, so you can always keep track of the condition of each adjustment arm on the car and minimise safety risks. Also, in the vehicle's braking system, the adjustment arm is just one part affecting braking force; any other issue elsewhere can also reduce overall braking performance, so if the braking system feels less effective, make sure to check everything and carry out repairs accordingly.
