Not installing a sprinkler is like not having brakes? Isn't that a bit exaggerated
Every winter, whether trucks can use water sprinklers always sparks a debate. When the temperature drops suddenly, the sprayed water can easily freeze. If you don't use them, it feels like truck braking and heat dissipation are also affected. As a result, opinions like "not installing a water sprinkler is like not having brakes" or "the north bans it, so the south must install it" become very loud.

The above views are a bit extreme, and some opinions like 'you can't have a one-size-fits-all approach, it depends on the road section' are more idealistic; they rely on personal awareness and are almost impossible to implement. Today, I'll take a rational and scientific approach to examine whether trucks should have water sprinklers.
▎Truck water sprinklers are not essential for driving safetyMany opinions and truckers feel wronged, as if not having a water sprinkler puts trucks at risk of brake failure. Online, there are also alarmist statements full of frustration and misunderstanding. But scientifically speaking, truck water sprinklers are definitely not a must-have for driving safety.The reason is simple: if they were necessary, they would be installed at the factory, because each vehicle's design has strict standards. Not making it a vehicle component precisely indicates that the sprinkler is just a 'trick' rather than something truckers can rely on as an essential braking aid.

As for the idea that northern regions require mandatory installation in the south, or even that some southern provinces do not allow trucks without sprinklers to be on the road, it is even less grounded in reality. Installing sprinklers is considered an illegal modification of the original vehicle structure, altering the motor vehicle's appearance and registered technical parameters, and strictly speaking, it violates the Road Traffic Safety Law. No road management authority dares to enforce a mandatory requirement, it can only be said that because this behaviour has little impact on driving safety and holds some practical significance, management in some southern provinces is relatively relaxed, with no administrative penalties or forced removal. In contrast, more and more provinces or regions in northern areas explicitly prohibit the installation of sprinklers on trucks. Although many truck drivers do not understand, sprinklers are not essential for driving safety. On a macro level, the drawbacks of sprinklers outweigh the benefits. From a broader perspective, the main disadvantage of sprinklers is their impact on other people's driving safety. Their effect is similar to using high beams: beneficial to oneself but posing serious safety risks to others. Many northern provinces explicitly forbid installing this equipment, mainly due to concerns about the road icing after spraying; it's not an exaggeration to say this behaviour "harms others for one's own benefit".
It's not objective for truck drivers to think that turning on the sprinkler only affects others and is extremely beneficial to themselves. Any hot object suddenly exposed to cold will be damaged, just like a person taking a cold shower right after sweating heavily, which greatly increases the chance of catching a cold.
The sprinkler continuously cools the hot brake pads and tyres, similar to the principle of quenching a sword, alternating between hot and cold, which makes the brake pads hard and brittle, and significantly reduces tyre lifespan. For trucks, the most scientific way to dissipate heat is natural cooling, spraying water is a makeshift method and carries side effects.
Moreover, water sprinklers can weigh up to 1 ton, sometimes several hundred kilograms, increasing the vehicle's weight, which means reducing effective load, so it's not economically worthwhile.
▎ The best braking method is good driving habits
Is it okay not to install a truck sprinkler? Of course, the number of accidents caused by brake failure is far lower than rear-end collisions or rollovers due to fatigue driving or speeding.
Vehicle design certainly takes various safety factors into account, but when limits are completely or frequently exceeded, such as overloading or driving for long periods, it can cause vehicle component damage, leading to situations like brake failure.
Some trucks drive faster than regular cars, which means they have to brake more often and harder. Some trucks are massively overloaded, which greatly increases the load on the brake pads. Some trucks drive for long periods without stopping, not giving the brakes time to cool naturally… These bad driving habits are actually the root cause of truck brake failure.
Any vehicle part, just like human organs, can develop problems if it operates under excessive load for a long time. So, slowing down, avoiding overload, not driving while tired, and giving the vehicle some breathing space can completely prevent brake failure disasters. Of course, in the highly competitive freight market, it's hard to expect drivers to always follow the "rules" strictly. We just want them not to have too high expectations of the water sprayers, which could make them overconfident, thinking that with a sprayer, long descents are fine. At least for now, the actual effectiveness of the sprayers is still debatable.
