Being a truck driver has always been a high-risk job, and drivers inevitably encounter minor accidents on the road from time to time, so knowing basic first aid is really important.

Recently, I summarised some first aid knowledge that truck drivers often encounter on the road and am sharing it with everyone to improve their ability to help themselves and others in case of emergencies.

▎ Carry a small first aid kit in the vehicle

When driving, truck drivers should have a small first aid kit in the vehicle. A common list of medicines is as follows:

Stomach medicine, anti-diarrhoea medicine, anti-inflammatory medicine, cold medicine, medicine for bruises and bumps, medicine for athlete's foot, bandages, gauze, disinfectant, thermometer, cotton swabs, medicine spoon, tweezers, etc.

Immediate Rescue:

1. If you cannot handle it yourself, be sure to ask others for help. Contact emergency services promptly. Also, no matter how minor the car accident, you should report it to the police. Ensure the safety of the injured.

2. As a rule, try not to move the injured. But if the accident site is too dangerous, get help and carefully move the injured to a safe place.

3. Prevent other accidents. Use a warning triangle to alert vehicles behind you.

Initial Assessment of Injuries:

1. If there is no response when calling, pressing the philtrum or Hegu acupoint has no effect, and both pupils are dilated, it can be concluded that the patient has lost consciousness.

 2. Gently tap the injured person on the shoulder (or face) and shout loudly near their ear: 'Hey! What's wrong?' to check their reaction.

 3. Besides checking consciousness, breathing, and pulse, it is even more important to check for severe bleeding. Correct way to call emergency services:

1. Patient's name, gender, and age.

2. The patient's most critical condition at the moment, such as fainting, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, etc., including the onset time, process, medications used, past medical history, and factors related to this episode.

3. Detailed address and phone number of the accident scene, as well as the exact location to wait for the ambulance, preferably a place with obvious landmarks.

Open the airway:

Place the injured person in a supine position. If there are foreign objects in the mouth, they should be removed immediately. People who are unconscious often have their tongue fall back and block the airway, in which case the rescuer should be on one side of the injured person, pressing down on the forehead with one hand and lifting the chin with the other so that the line from the jaw to the earlobe is roughly 90° to the ground, opening the airway.

First aid for arterial bleeding

1. For minor arterial bleeding with small wounds, cover the wound with sterile cotton and apply pressure with a bandage to stop the bleeding.

2. If bleeding does not stop, raise the injured limb to slow the blood flow and help stop the bleed.

3. For severe limb bleeding, a tourniquet can be applied above the wound. A towel or cloth should be placed underneath before tightening, and it must be loosened every half hour. The total time should not exceed two hours to prevent limb ischemia or necrosis. After initial treatment, seek hospital care immediately.

Methods of transport

Proper handling methods can reduce the patient's pain and prevent worsening injuries; incorrect handling methods can not only increase the patient's suffering but also worsen the injury. Therefore, correct handling is especially important in on-site first aid. Key points: During handling, keep in mind the following: After on-site first aid, choose measures such as supporting, carrying on the back, or two-person transport based on the severity and characteristics of the patient's injuries; if spinal, pelvic, or bilateral leg fractures are suspected, do not let the patient try to stand; if rib fractures are suspected, do not carry the patient on your back; for severe injuries, unconsciousness, internal organ damage, spinal or pelvic fractures, or bilateral leg fractures, use a stretcher for transport; if no stretcher is available, make a simple stretcher and pay attention to contraindications. Artificial respiration

Place your thumb and forefinger on the forehead to pinch the nostrils shut, cover the patient's mouth with yours, take a deep breath first, then blow air twice. Do not blow too forcefully. If the patient's chest rises, it means the artificial respiration is effective. If the carotid pulse disappears, it can be confirmed that the heart has stopped (the carotid is located 2-3 cm beside the Adam's apple).

Postscript:

Finally, we hope that all fellow drivers never have to use this first aid knowledge and that you always have a safe journey.
