Even when your beloved car is idle, it still needs maintenance. Do you know these tips?

For truck drivers, their truck is like a constant companion. But sometimes, when other things come up, the truck might sit idle for a few days, and many drivers just store it in a garage. What many don't realise is that this can easily cause problems for the truck. Today, let's go over a few maintenance tips for when a truck is not in use and see if you get them.

● Prevent metal from rusting

Rust is mainly caused by the combined action of moisture, oxygen and corrosive substances in the air. Therefore, for cars that are parked for a long time, keep the metal surfaces clean. The garage where the car is parked should be well ventilated to keep the relative humidity below 70. Dust, dirt and moisture on the car should be removed in time. Rust-prone parts and surfaces of components should be coated with engine oil, grease or wrapped in oiled paper. Any holes in assemblies should be sealed to prevent air, moisture and dust from entering.● Prevent rubber products from ageing and deteriorating.

Rubber products on cars, like tyres, drive belts and dust covers, often age, swell or deform, which reduces their performance and shortens their lifespan. Rubber ages mainly because it is an unsaturated polymer hydrocarbon that easily absorbs oxygen from the air and oxidises. Vulcanised rubber is also somewhat porous, so oxygen can get inside and cause oxidation. Direct sunlight in particular speeds up rubber ageing. If rubber products get contaminated with diesel or engine oil, they can swell, become soft and lose elasticity. To prevent rubber from ageing, avoid direct sunlight and contact with mineral oils.

● Prevent cotton and linen products from rotting

Cushions and carpets easily absorb moisture. Especially in damp areas and during rainy seasons, they are prone to mildew. So car owners should frequently check cotton and linen items in the car, air them out when needed, and keep them dry.

● Frequently check the engine's condition

Start the engine at least once a month, let it idle for 4-5 minutes to check its operation. If there are any unusual signs, adjust or repair it promptly. Also, regularly check the battery. The electrolyte level in the battery must be 10-15mm above the plates; if it's low, add distilled water. Make sure the battery is fully charged, and charge it if necessary.
