What is the use of a dump truck dryer? How should the air pressure be adjusted?


The so-called "mud truck" refers to a large heavy-duty dump truck used on construction sites to transport sand, stones, soil, and other building materials. It is jokingly called a "mud truck" because its cabin is often covered in mud. 

This type of vehicle generally uses pneumatic brakes, and its main components include an air pump, dryer, air pressure regulator, four-way valve, air tank, foot brake valve, hand brake valve, relay valve, quick release valve, brake wheel cylinder, and more.

▎What are the functions of the dryer and the air pressure regulator?

In a pneumatic brake system, compressed air is the working medium. It needs to maintain sufficiently high and stable pressure, and be clean enough to ensure the normal operation of various valves in the system.

For this reason, the system is equipped with two components: the dryer and the air pressure regulator. Their role is to provide clean, dry compressed air for the brake system and keep the system pressure within a normal range (usually 8–10 bar).

To simplify the system, these two components are generally integrated together and collectively referred to as the dryer assembly. I won’t go into the working principle, or you might fall asleep.

▎How to Adjust the Air Pressure of the Braking System

On this assembly, there is a pressure regulator valve that can adjust the system pressure. When the system pressure reaches the specified level, the pressure regulator valve opens, allowing the compressed air pumped from the air compressor to be released through the exhaust port of the pressure regulator, so the system pressure stops rising and the air compressor runs without load.

If the system releases air before reaching the specified pressure, we can turn the adjustment screw of the pressure regulator valve clockwise to increase the exhaust pressure of the system.

If the system pressure has reached or exceeded the specified pressure but has not yet been relieved through exhaust, we can turn the adjustment screw of the pressure regulating valve counterclockwise to reduce the system exhaust pressure. We repeat adjusting this screw in this way until the exhaust pressure reaches the system's specified pressure. 

However, in practice, this pressure regulating valve is not easily damaged, and its adjustment pressure generally does not change. If there is suddenly a situation where the brake system pressure cannot rise, it is usually due to a leak or other fault in the system.

If compressed air is discharged from the exhaust port of the air pressure regulator, it indicates that the internal rubber seals are damaged. This situation is usually caused by oil leaking from the air pump or the drying tank losing its drying function. In this case, we should replace the desiccant assembly and repair the air pump, rather than simply adjusting the exhaust pressure of the pressure regulator.
