▎Three Causes of Brake Failure
1. Lack of necessary maintenance of the braking system, such as excessive impurities in the master brake cylinder, poor sealing, failure of the vacuum booster pump, overly dirty brake fluid, or using a mixture of different brake fluids that creates air blockages when heated, leakage from the master or wheel cylinders, or air leaks at the air reservoir or pipe connections.
2. Mechanical failure due to improper operation, such as prolonged downhill driving causing the brake pads to generate excessive heat through friction, carbonization of the brake drums, leading to complete brake failure.
3. Severe overloading, where under the influence of gravitational acceleration, the vehicle's momentum increases, directly resulting in brake failure.
▎ Handbrake braking
If the brakes fail, you can use the handbrake to stop the vehicle. The correct method is to slowly pull up the handbrake in stages, repeatedly tightening and releasing it to gradually slow down and stop the car. It is important to press the safety button on the handbrake lever while pulling it, as this allows the lever to move smoothly during the tightening and releasing process, preventing the handbrake from locking up.
▎ Engine braking
Manual transmission cars can also decelerate and stop by forcefully downshifting. The specific method is to directly shift into 2nd gear, then release the accelerator and lift the clutch. At this time, the vehicle will feel like it is braking abruptly. Then, shift into 1st gear when appropriate. At this point, you can turn off the ignition. If the vehicle experiences brake failure in dangerous areas such as downhill sections in the suburbs, to prevent the situation from worsening, you can, if necessary, use roadside obstacles like sand or dirt piles, grassy mounds, ditches, trees, or rocks to help stop the vehicle.
▎Emergency Self-Rescue Measures
1. Seat belts can prevent passengers from being thrown into the windshield during emergency braking. If you are not wearing a seat belt, it is better not to resist the impact forcefully, as this may cause more serious injury than letting your body move naturally. At the moment of impact, try to move away from the steering wheel as early as possible, cross your arms over your chest, and cover your head with your hands.
2. According to relevant data, the front passenger seat is the most dangerous seat. If you are seated there, first hold your head and lie back in the seat, or clench your fists and protect your forehead with your wrists while tucking in and lifting your knees to protect your abdomen and chest.
3. The best way to protect yourself on a sleeper berth is to quickly stretch one leg forward and press it against the back of the seat in front. Bend your elbows in front of your chest, spread your hands to protect your head and face, and press your back against the seat.
4. Here we also want to emphasize that in the event of a traffic accident or emergency braking, you should quickly push the armrest or seat back forward with both hands and use one leg forward and one back to push forward with force.
